The painter and provocateur William Dunlap coined “hypothetical realism” (it isn’t real, but it could be). This work uses “ambiguous realism” (it looks real, but what is it?) so that multiple interpretations are possible (caves, a human heart, the reflection of a lake, some microbe, some planet?), all of which hold different meanings to everyone. If it’s possible to see all kinds of things in one image, might they all be connected in some way? Could everything be interconnected? What would that mean?
This is the second drawing in this series of work, something like 90 hours of drawing time (once it was drawing time). It’s a key work in my thinking and development.
